Greetings from the NJ Half Marathon

Today I went for a run and traveled to the Monmouth Racetrack to run the NJ Half Marathon. What a fun race! I arrived early in order to make sure I beat the traffic leading into the racetrack. By 7:30 the bugle sounded and the race began, with Born to Run blasting over sound system. In no time we were weaving through a tour of the ocean towns, high fiving a decent crowd and enjoying the 50 degree weather that was holding off the impending rain showers. I kept a pretty even pace except for around miles 9/10 when the course changed and the wind hit me from the wrong angle. But at mile 10 I smiled and found my groove again after reading the mile marker (each had different Bruce Springsteen lyrics) this one said, “can’t start a fire without a spark.” This was the second time I ran this race (the full marathon last time) and the crowd support was pretty great this time around. After making the final turn miles 11 and 12 were on the boardwalk. We passed by staple Jersey Shore institutions, McLoone’s and Max’s Bar & Grill, before finally hitting the finish line. My medal is pretty sweet and might be one of my favorites! It looks like a record and spins!!! Finally I got back to Lavallette and ate lunch with my Dad before the three hour drive back to Maryland. As I drove over the Tunney Bridge trying to catch a glimpse of the ocean in my rear view mirror, Bruce sang off his Greetings From Asbury Park album on my XM radio. “Well, my feet they finally took root in the earth, but I got me a nice little place in the stars….” Until next time, farewell Lava!

Motivation Monday?

One week until the NJ Half Marathon – looking forward to a Jersey Shore run!

Today I went for a run after tons of procrastination and lots of motivational searching. We drove back from NJ this morning in time to do laundry, unpack and clean up everything we dropped Thursday before we left town. I have to say I was tired, hungry and not motivated to run. I’m sure every profession could claim to be the busiest, most stressful or overworked group employed today. Teaching is tough, under appreciated by the public, yet the most rewarding profession that I wouldn’t trade for anything else. However, as a mom I wish I had a few more days to spend relaxing with my own kids which is part of the reason why it was hard staying motivated this weekend to run. It reminded me of the quote below I saw on Facebook from #lifeinadayofarunner. Everyday you keep showing up and you find a way even if you only have a spring weekend and no spring break.

Fat Bottomed Girls You….

Today I went for a run after school on a perfect, sunny day around Honeygo. What an amazing day for a run despite staying late for coach class and missing opening day for the Orioles. In the end it was Queen’s Fat Bottom Girls for the win as I finished a solid 5 mile loop around Honeygo. It was one of those days when the music kept me light on my feet, I could breathe in the smell of spring and the sun warmed my face. I left school with a sense of accomplishment after helping a few seniors reach their graduation requirements, helping my 9th graders in coach class and ready to roll out our 9th grade HSA test prep on Tuesday. How could I not have a solid run!?

….. you make the rockin’ world gooooo round!

Spring Flowers

Today I went for a run on a Friday, after a busy day at school. When the weather is perfect like today all you can think is, “Yay it’s finally the weekend!!!!” After my friend bailed on our after school run I decided to try and get four miles done even though it was tempting to hang out back. I mean haven’t I been lazy enough lately!? It was perfect weather, I had Queen and the Allman brothers along for the ride and now I’m ready for a quick trip home to NJ this weekend!

Ever notice how many types of dafadils there are!? I must have passed six different types today.

Windy, but no pain!

Today I went for a run without pain for the first time in almost three weeks. I think for runners it’s hard to give up a simple routine even if it’s at the expense of getting healthy. I tripped the first week in March and it took until March 17th for me to finally stop all activity and rest. Now let’s be real I ran 4 miles on Saturday which made me feel like a super wimp, followed by a defeating 5 miles on Sunday. (That’s far from an average long run!) However, after running today and not feeling my IT band burning I understand that sometimes your body just needs a break and there is no shame in that.

St Pat’s 10k

Today I went for a run and ran my second 10k ever! I was pretty excited to run my second 10k and I got to run it around DC! Since I kinda jumped into half marathons and marathons I never really got to take in the ease of shorter runs! You mean you can run a race in less than four hours!? Today I took to the streets of DC with perfect weather and pretty amazing views of the monuments and almost budding cherry trees. I’ve finally named the source of my pain – my IT band. My IT band really hated me at mile 5, but I kept repeating my mantra – run strong – and I didn’t give up on myself. I kept a solid pace, felt great, and now I’m pretty pumped for the upcoming Cherry Blossom 10 miler – the trees should be in peak bloom!!!

March Winds

Today I went for a run in 50 degree weather, but +16mph winds. March sure comes in like a lion, but hopefully the sun and warmer temperatures are here to stay. I got in a run after school that was pretty solid despite the initial wind wall. I might be embarrassed to admit this, but Cardi B came on and I was jammin…. “They call me Cardi Bardi, banging body, Spicy mami, hot tamale…” Ha!

Run Meh

Today I went for a run and got in some miles after taking it easy this week. This was a busy week and I was just too tired to run. My parents came into town Friday and left Saturday so I was happy to spend time with them at the expense of running. Also my leg was still a little stiff, maybe from my fall last week or the treadmill miles, so taking a break helped. Overall I got my miles in after church and then got to take my daughter to DC for some girl time. Bam.

Sunday Shakes

Today I went for a run before a ‘massive’ snow storm is set to blanket the northeast. I got in some hilly miles in the morning and was honestly proud of the steady pace I held despite the steep climbs in the Kingsville area. I feel my legs gaining strength due to Barre classes and adding in random speedwork. After a busy morning of Faith Formation and running errands the kids and I grabbed milkshakes as a treat. It’s all about balance right!? (PS – How about the Tokyo Marathon yesterday in the pouring rain!!! We watched the cool views of the city and hoped to catch a glimpse of a few Team Ultra teammates.)

13 Misty Miles

Today I went for a run getting in a Taco Bell Harbor Half with the girls. The rainy, snowy overnight mix hung around and forced us to push through a damp first half of our run. Despite the dreary weather, we finished 13 miles while enjoying our conversation and a few good laughs along the way. Running in wet socks, in damp weather, in cold winds or in less than ideal conditions usually forces one to question why they are out there in the first place. Just remember — “If you wait for perfect conditions, you’ll never get anything done.” Ecclesiates 11:4 — so what are you waiting for?
